October 15, 2014 – The largest “Free Weekend” ever begins tomorrow on Steam. Beginning at 10 am Pacific Time, 10 popular titles will be available to play free of charge, and available for purchase at tremendous savings.
The 10 titles being offered are:
Company of Heroes 2
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
No purchase is required to play any or all of these games all weekend long. All you need is a Steam account (available free of charge).
Steam is a leading platform for PC, Mac, and Linux software and games with over 100 million active accounts worldwide, and offering over 3,700 titles.
The Steam Summer sale 2014, gave me the opportunity to add to my PC game collection. One of which was Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition. I have since finished my OCD game play with Watch Dogs and am ready to move on.
Fallout 3 GOTY:
Fallout 3 is a post apocalyptic sci-fi action role-playing open world video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios, the third major installment in the Fallout series. The Game of the Year Edition includes the original Fallout 3 game as well as all 5 of the downloadable content packs, but I have taken on the task of following a YouTube tutorial that shows how to modify [mod] the game in ways that the game experience will be different in look, feel, story and options that will enhance the game. Since I have not played this game since it originally came out. There is quite a bit that I have forgotten and with many mods that I have added, I am slightly scared and excited at the same time.
XCOM Enemy Within: Long War:
This mod makes more than 700 changes, large and small, to the vanilla version of the game. It is harder and longer than the vanilla version but gives you many more tools to combat the alien threat.
The PC Gaming Hardware Market, which consists of personal computers, upgrades, and peripherals used for gaming, is strong and healthy amongst the backdrop of general declines in the PC market.
Ted Pollak, Senior Gaming Analyst at JR notes that the $21.5 billion market is over twice the size of the console gaming hardware market. “We continue to see a shift in casual console customers moving to mobile. While this is also occurring in the lower end PC gaming world, more money is being directed to mid and high range PC builds and upgrades by gamers. Committed PC gamers are generally not interested in pure content consumption platforms. They are power users and pay thousands for the ability to play games at very high settings and then do business, video/photo editing, content creation and other tasks with maximum horsepower at their disposal in a desktop ergonomic environment.”
Gaming has become one of the cornerstones of the entire home and personal PC market. As major companies evaluate their marketing and R&D budgets, JPR is seeing more investment in gaming oriented designs, and more money spent advertising to this group of consumers.
Jon Peddie, president of JPR, notes that “Nvidia, Intel, and AMD have enthusiast CPUs and GPUs that are so powerful, when combined with SSD’s and fast memory they absolutely trounce the computing power and gaming capabilities of the newest console generation. Being able to drive 3840 × 2160 (4K) at acceptable frame rates is already a reality for the highest end configurations and the mass market is now able to push 2560 × 1440. PC Gamers with good displays are able to enjoy millions and millions of pixels more than console gamers get on HDTVs. This translates into being able to see more and a better gaming experience”
The PC Gaming Hardware Market is very diverse amongst its different segments. The high end Enthusiast segment is very performance and style oriented much like sports car owners. While the low end just wants to play games on something and this is why the segment is under threat from cheaper gaming solutions.
The report contains the following content:
- After-Market AIB: Discussion and estimates of after-market graphics cards sales as upgrades and for home builds

- Accessories and DIY: Discussion and estimates of accessory sales and the Do-It-Yourself builds
- Charts, graphics, tables and more. Included with this report is an Excel workbook. It contains the data we used to create the charts in this report. The workbook has the charts and supplemental information broken out by platform.

After all, both games feature third-person perspectives, free-running and in some ways, adopt a similar visual style. After going hands-on with the PlayStation 4 version of the game at E3 2014 and discussing its development with Monolith Productions’ Studio Head Kevin Stephens, it’s clear Shadow of Mordor’s developers want to forge their own path yet still remain true to Tolkien’s intricate Lord of the Rings (LORT) universe.
This isn’t Assassin’s Creed with a coat of LOTR-influenced paint.
“Well we look at all games and movies and media for inspiration. I think that the third-person action adventure genre, there’s not a lot of games in that genre. So I think we’re going to look like somebody. I think people bring to it what they’re used to [Assassin’s Creed] and I think that speaks to that franchise. But no we didn’t consciously set out to be anything but our own experience,” said Stephens.
Shadow of Mordor is set between the events of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, allowing Monolith Productions a significant amount of freedom when it came to crafting their own unique story. In the game you play as Talion, a ranger of Gondor, who dies in battle but is then resurrected by a Wraith and given special powers.
Rebellion has launched new DLC for tactical shooter Sniper Elite 3.
While previous Sniper Elite 3 DLC challenged players to assassinate Hitler, the latest campaign add-on tasks them with saving Winston Churchill.
It will come in three parts, with part one now live on Steam for PC ($9.99). It was launched alongside the new Patriot Weapons Pack (4.99) and a free update featuring a new multiplayer map called Airstrip.
The DLC was announced in a new video in which Rebellion provides an update on its future plans for the game, which include confirmation that all DLC will also be released on PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
Rebellion says: “Set after the events of Sniper Elite 3, Save Churchill follows OSS sniper Karl Fairburne in his attempts to uncover and prevent a Nazi assassination attempt on the British Prime Minister in the run up to the famous Casablanca Conference of 1943.”
